How do you know you’re obsessed with life coaching and NLP? When you’re out in London, you hear a Micheal Jackson song and you think, I’m going to write about this in my blog!
A Michael Jackson Unrelated Story
A week ago I went to a weight watching meeting. I decided I want to learn how to eat healthy, and my life coach helped me realise that attending such meetings may increase my knowledge and provide me with a supportive environment. I went there with an open mind, excited and eager to learn. Unfortunately the minute I met the group leader; the person who is supposed to be teaching us how to eat and live healthy I was slightly disappointed. She did not look like she is someone who follows a healthy regime! Still, I kept an open mind and searched for some ‘before and after’ pictures of her hoping that I would prove myself wrong.
What’s this have to do with the king of pop?
A Michael Jackson Related Story
The song I heard when I was out in London is called ‘Man in the Mirror’ and the lyrics go: I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror. I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways. And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer. If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place. Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change.
And that my friends is the answer to your question: How do I change the world?
In the Holy Quran, there’s a versus that says “God does not change the condition of people until they change themselves“
Regardless of whether you believe in God or not, take a moment and reflect on the message behind this versus. The message that for you to change people, you have to start with yourself.
When I looked for before and after pictures of the weight watching group leader and all I found was old picture of her looking the same as she was at the time of the meeting I was disappointed. The thought that ran through my head was, how is going to help me eat healthy and watch my weight if she can’t do it herself? I decided to never go back there again.
Had she on the other hand set an example of herself and proven to the group that she’s done the change and she’s now in control of her health, I would’ve definitely been motivated by her achievements and I would’ve been inspired to follow her steps.
Leadership 101 – Lead By Example
If you want to help someone undergo a change (or even change the world), whatever this change may be one of the best ways you can positively influence this someone is by changing yourself. Once you’ve done that, and once this change has become a part of who you are and what you do, people around you will be unable to resist it and they will follow your lead. Why?
Simply because now it’s so engraved in you, that it’s an undeniable part of your reality. And slowly (or very quickly!), if they choose to, people around you will join into your reality that you, yourself have created. They will join you, one by one, perhaps starting with those closest to you. Maybe your siblings, your parents, your neighbours then your street followed by your neighbourhood, your city, your country and eventually the world.
Remember what the king of pop says, if you are to become a leader to those around you, if you were to change the world, you must, absolutely must, start with the:
Man (or woman :)) In the Mirror. Stand Up and Lift Yourself, Now! Make That Change.
